01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

If you’re craving authentic Mexican flavors right in the heart of Portland, Xocalo PDX delivers an exceptional dining experience that truly captures the essence of home-style Mexican cooking. Nestled conveniently at 1130 NE Holladay St, this vibrant eatery offers a menu brimming with hearty, satisfying dishes that invite you to savor each bite.

One cannot talk about Xocalo PDX without highlighting the allure of their Tres Leches Cake. This isn’t your typical tres leches dessert—it starts with a rich chocolate cake base, lovingly stuffed with fresh strawberries, then topped with a luscious Oregon dairy whip that melts perfectly on the tongue. It’s an indulgence that feels both decadent and comforting, leaving a lasting impression on every dessert lover.

For those seeking a savory delight, their Regular Burrito is a standout. Wrapped in a warm flour tortilla and filled with refried beans, Mexican rice, and a blend of four cheeses, it balances textures and flavors beautifully. You get to choose your preferred protein, which makes each burrito a personalized feast. The Torta also deserves a shoutout: served on a Telera bun, it’s packed with the same fresh ingredients, topped with crisp lettuce and the perfect layer of melted cheese—ideal for a flavorful, handheld lunch.

The atmosphere at Xocalo PDX is a warm embrace of Portland’s neighborhood charm. The owners’ genuine personalities shine through, creating a homey, inviting space where locals and visitors alike feel instantly welcome. The buzz from customer reviews speaks volumes—Jane Noneya vividly recalls being transported back to Mexico by their authentic homemade hot sauces, while Luke Raters enjoys the quick, friendly service and the convenient location right next to the light rail station and Holladay Park.

A visit to Xocalo PDX also means savoring a meal that respects bold flavors with finesse. Whether you’re grabbing a protein-packed breakfast burrito before work or lingering over lunch while soaking in the inviting ambiance, the experience strikes the perfect balance between fast, efficient service and carefully crafted dishes. And if you're a fan of less traditional pairings, the cold coffee here is a delightful refresher, especially on warmer days.

In short, Xocalo PDX is more than just a Mexican restaurant; it’s a flavorful journey grounded in authenticity, community spirit, and quality. Whether you’re a Portland resident or just passing through, this gem is worth adding to your list for a genuinely satisfying meal that feels like a fresh taste of Mexico’s heart right in PDX.

I think it’s easier to be open-minded about the atmosphere, etc., when you’re a resident of Portland and have traveled. That being said, I like the homey feel and personality of the owners coming through. I like this place. It’s directly on the train line, an easy hop-off, hop-off. I was pleasantly surprised by the authentic homemade hot sauce(s). Hot was hot! It took me straight back to Mexico. It was the first thing I noticed. The prices were reasonable for this area. The pastries, horchata, and everything else we tried were delicious. I’d like to see them stick around and thrive, so I’m throwing in my two cents. We will definitely visit again. It’s my son’s new favorite.

The Trekking Pawns here! The Spicy wasn’t as spicy as we hoped, felt more like crushed up dried peppers, but that’s okay. The bowl was good and the cold coffee was very delicious in the heat.

Went here twice for lunch, and both times the line was out the door with attendees from the convention center. Nevertheless, the staff worked very efficiently and the line moved quickly. I recommend the tamales.

This place is a hidden gem in the NE Portland LLOYD DISTRICT. My chicken burrito was perfect so I had to order a 2nd one to go. Ingredients are fresh and it was delicious. Staff is friendly and happy it is a short walk from my residence. Be back again soon!

Nice place for tacos and burritos. First time trying this restaurant today and happy to report the tacos are fresh and tasty. I ordered one taco of each meat offered; one pastor, one asada, and one carnitas. Each kind of meat was seasoned and cooked well and were served in two small fresh, soft, corn tortillas topped with fresh purple cabbage and cilantro with limes on the side to squeeze on top. They offer two salsas to accompany, both fire roasted, a tomato based salsa (the spicier of the two), and a tangy tomatillo salsa. Both salsas were delicious and a good compliment to the flavor of the tacos. These are great street style tacos. I also bought their fresh green juice and it was delicious. Service was fast and friendly and the place itself is clean and airy. I'm happy Xocalo is open in this area. It gives returning workers another lunch option from which to choose.
